This is an example: a training brief — “0% interest halal car finance, guaranteed approval” flash promo, the classic UK trap. This is what the inputs look like. Fill in your own brief →

Inputs for the brief

UK · Islamic finance product · no occasion · goal: new customers apply for halal car finance online · mechanic: flash promo: 0% interest halal car finance, guaranteed approval for the first 100 applican

What is used in practice

Factual statements about the practice of this market and segment — not “allowed” but “has been used”.

For savings products, the UK market standard is "Expected Profit Rate (EPR)" with an explicit "not guaranteed" qualifier, optionally reinforced by a track-record argument ("has always paid the rate quoted — on occasions even more") and an exit right if the rate drops.
Used before: Al Rayan, Gatehouse, Nomo — market-wide EPR vocabulary (uk-fca-patterns §5, M4)
The "X instead of Y + comparability bridge" formula is the working pattern of the UK market: first state what you do NOT charge (interest), then name what you DO charge (rental-profit charge), then give a comparability layer ("for easy comparison, we also show an APR-equivalent").
Used before: Ayan Capital: «No interest is paid — you pay an agreed rental-profit charge… APR-equivalent»; Gatehouse: «works similar to a conventional savings account, with one important difference» (uk-fca-patterns §5)
Market leaders name their Shariah board in the body copy, not just the footer: named scholars or a downloadable fatwa. This is what converts a Shariah claim from a marketing promise into a verifiable statement.
Used before: Ayan (Alhamd Shariah Advisory — Mufti Ibrahim Essa, Mufti Faraz Adam), StrideUp (Amanah Advisors), Nomo (downloadable fatwa) — uk-fca-patterns §3/M3

What to account for

Every constraint comes with a substitute leading to the same commercial goal.

"Interest free" / "0% interest" in a promotion of a credit product is prohibited by CONC 3.5.12R(1)(b) whenever the total amount payable exceeds the cash price — which is always the case for a halal HP/Ijarah structure with a margin. This is a legal blocker in the UK, not a style choice.
  • Theological framing with structure: «[Brand] does not charge interest — you pay an agreed rental-profit charge», plus the contract named (Ijarah)used before: Ayan Capital pattern, validated as the correct route (uk-fca-patterns B1/§5)
  • Full price transparency instead of a zero-claim: Representative example with Representative X% APR as required by CONC 3.5.5Rused before: standard compliant UK credit promotions
Any rate or cost indication in a credit-product promotion ("from X%", profit rate, payment amount) triggers the mandatory representative example (8 elements incl. Representative APR, CONC 3.5.5R). A cost claim without it is a legal blocker; note the inversion: the APR must be PROMINENT — hiding it below the incentive is the violation, not showing it.
  • Include the full representative example; keep «Representative X% APR» wording and prominence (CONC 3.5.9R, 3.5.7R)used before: Ayan creative July 2026: «Rates from 7.9% APR. Representative 11.9% APR» — expert-confirmed YELLOW, no blocker
  • For short social formats — remove all price indications from the creative and carry the representative example on the landing pageused before: standard short-format practice; partial disclosure escalates to manual check (B2-UK)
"Guaranteed approval", "credit regardless of status", "no checks" — breach of CONC 3.3.3R; for an Islamic brand it is a double failure: legal plus undermining responsible finance (escalates towards bay' al-mudtarr when targeting distressed borrowers).
  • Honest qualifier: «subject to status and affordability checks»used before: standard UK credit promotion wording
  • Promise speed of the answer, not the probability of approval («decision within X minutes»)used before: accessibility framing without overpromise (cf. ACCESSIBILITY_OVERPROMISE)
"100% Sharia-compliant" without a named board or certificate is treated by Anglosphere regulators as a marketing promise requiring procedural backing — SEC fined Wahed Invest $300k for exactly this gap (claimed compliance, lacked written policies).
  • Name the board in the body copy: scholars' names, not just a footer mentionused before: Ayan: Alhamd Shariah Advisory named on landing; StrideUp: Amanah Advisors
  • Link a downloadable fatwa/certificate directly from the creative's landing pageused before: Nomo pattern (uk-fca-patterns R3)
Aggressive anti-riba creative that degrades or destroys symbols (burning currency, defaced notes) risks an ASA "serious offence" ruling — Wahed's TfL posters were banned on exactly this ground (75 complaints, upheld). It also alienates the mixed audience that provides up to 60% of new customers of UK Islamic banks.
  • Positive value framing: transparency, risk-sharing, ethics — sells to both Muslim and mixed audiencesused before: Temporal: mixed audience buys transparency/ethics, not religious labels; uk-fca-patterns R4/R5
  • Contrast through mechanics, not imagery: «what you pay and why» side-by-side, no destroyed symbolsused before: Gatehouse normalization formula (§5)
UK Muslim audiences range from liberal to orthodox; copy that assumes a degree of religiosity ("a true Muslim would not…", religious obligation framing) narrows the audience and reads as presumptuous.
  • Universal benefit layer (price, transparency, service) + a separate line for the practising segment in its own channelsused before: Temporal ch.3 segmentation; uk-fca-patterns R5
  • Ethics/tayyib framing without confessional vocabularyused before: Ogilvy Noor findings: compliance ≠ perceived sincerity (Temporal)
Murabaha/Ijarah/riba used in a UK promotion without a one-line plain-English explanation conflicts with Consumer Duty (PRIN 2A.5.7G: explain terms "as simply as possible") and leaves the educated-Muslim segment perplexed (El-Gamal's "interest-free… pays 4% profit" paradox).
  • One plain-English sentence of mechanics next to the term: «structured as an Ijarah (rental) agreement»used before: uk-fca-patterns M1/M6 — the exact Ayan fix
  • Glossary link on the landing page; keep the creative itself term-freeused before: standard UK financial promotions practice

Decision points

Here the norm depends on a decision the engine cannot make — the question is yours.

The promotion regime depends on the legal form, which the engine cannot infer: Ijara wa iqtina / HP (regulated credit → full CONC 3.5 incl. representative APR), pure hire (no APR), home purchase plan (MCOB 3A + the caps warning «YOUR HOME MAY BE AT RISK…»), savings (EPR vocabulary). Which structure is this campaign for? Confirm before production.
  • Confirm the structure with the client and lock the matching promo regime before any creative workused before: uk-fca-patterns §1 product-regime map
  • If HPP — include the caps warning; it is the industry standard (Al Rayan, Gatehouse)used before: uk-fca-patterns M5

3. What works in this market

  • Market leaders name their Shariah board in the body copy, not just the footer: named scholars or a downloadable fatwa. This is what converts a Shariah claim from a marketing promise into a verifiable statement.

4. To agree with us before production
